The first five verses of Chapter 22 deal with the dangers of wealth. But the verses are not so much about the having of wealth as the desire for it. We are challenged to consider our priorities and, most importantly, to keep our minds and hearts on God.

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. The rich and the poor have this in common: the Lord is the maker of them all. The clever see danger and hide; but the simple go on, and suffer for it. The reward for humility and fear of the Lord is riches and honor and life. Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse; the cautious will keep far from them.   (Prov. 22:1-5)

Meditation: "The clever see danger and hide..." When it comes to wealth in particular, what does that mean? I think it means that we see the lure of wealth and of material things in this world and we hide from the danger. If we get in the mindset of wanting more, that what we have is never enough, that mindset never changes. Our desires become our obsessions if we let them. So, Solomon says, better to hide from the "thorns and the snares" before us. Are there "thorns and snares" in your life from which you need to hide or avoid? I think there are for all of us. Our verses for today remind us that there is nothing wrong with riches and honor and life - if those things come from God.
