Music Director Job Posting
Irvington United Methodist Church is seeking a salaried, part-time (hours vary seasonally) Director of Music to serve as the organist, choir director, and leader of the music program at the church. Our current program includes a volunteer chancel choir and a handbell choir.
Qualifications include:
- Understanding of Methodist hymns, anthems, and music at Irvington
- Demonstrated ability to play the organ and grand piano
- Demonstrated ability to accompany soloists and/or choral groups as part of the worship service
- Demonstrated skills in improvisation, sight-reading, and transposition
- Ability to work with a variety of individuals involved in worship planning (e.g. Worship & Music committee and the pastor)
Responsibilities Include:
- Lead music on the organ or a combination of organ and piano for regular worship service (Sunday mornings at 10:30)
- Lead music on the organ and/or piano for special services (Christmas Eve, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and other special services determined by the Worship & Music committee and pastor
- Provide a prelude and postlude music for church services
- Lead and accompany Chancel Choir on a schedule set by the leader and choir (The current program involves weekly practices from mid- August through Pentecost, with weekly anthems during this period. The choir takes a break in the summer.)
- Lead handbell choir on a schedule set by the leader and choir (The current program involves rehearsing once a week during the school year to practice selections offered on occasion during worship services.)
- Serve as accompanist for any soloist and/or special music during services
- Coordination with church office regarding needed tuning and maintenance of all instruments
