Yesterday evening I watched the movie The Two Popes (available on Netflix). I was struck by a conversation between Pope Benedict and Cardinal Bergoglio (later Pope Francis), in which Pope Benedict expresses his pain at no longer feeling God's presence or hearing God's voice. In this episode, I discuss the "dark night of the soul," the times when we feel lost or abandoned by God, and how this time is essential in our faith journey if our faith is to mature and be strengthened.
