Today's psalm asks the question: What would life be like if the Lord was not on our side? The context may be different for this psalmist than for us today, but it's still a valid question. What would your life be like without God?

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side —let Israel now say—if it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when our enemies attacked us, then they would have swallowed us up alive,     when their anger was kindled against us; then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; then over us would have gone the raging waters. Blessed be the Lord, who has not given us as prey to their teeth. We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.   (Ps. 124)

For the psalmist, if God were not on his side he would have been swallowed up alive or swept away by raging waters. The imagery is vivid: God is his foundation who holds him fast and protects him from whatever comes against him. What words would you use to describe the help that God provides you in your everyday life?

Prayer: God, our help is in you. Protect us from whatever may come against us. Hold us firm when life's circumstances threaten to pull us down or pull us away from what we know to be right. Thank you that you stand by us, holding us and lifting us up when we need help. You made the heavens and the earth - and yet you care for each of us. Blessed be your name. Amen.
