O Lord, how many are my foes!
    Many are rising against me;
many are saying to me,
    ‘There is no help for you in God.’
But you, O Lord, are a shield around me,
    my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.
I cry aloud to the Lord,
    and he answers me from his holy hill.
I lie down and sleep;
    I wake again, for the Lord sustains me.
I am not afraid of tens of thousands of people
    who have set themselves against me all around.
Rise up, O Lord!
    Deliver me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
    you break the teeth of the wicked.
Deliverance belongs to the Lord;
    may your blessing be on your people!
(Ps. 3)

Is this psalm, David is crying out to God while fleeing for his life from his son, Absalom, who wanted to kill him and take the throne. Even in this difficult time, David trusted that God would hear his cry, comfort him, and protect him.

There may be no one seeking our death, but we all experience times when things don’t go as we plan or hope. It's easy to feel overwhelmed, and to feel that God has abandoned us. Psalm 3 is a reminder that even in the worst of times, God is still with us. What does it mean to you that when you "cry aloud to the Lord," God will sustain you? Does your faith sustain you in difficult times?

Prayer: Gracious and loving God, we thank you that in our moments of desperation and fear, you are with us. We pray for comfort and encouragement in whatever we face in life, knowing that because your presence there is no need for fear. Amen.
