Our word for today is “words.” Words carry power. Words matter. The old saying that words can’t hurt us isn’t true … it’s a lie, and we know it. Words hurt. But words also heal. Words can discourage and encourage. Words can spew hate, create division, or show love. Jesus said these sobering words in Matthew 12:36: “I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter.” We will be judged by the words we have spoken. I don’t know about you, but I have spoken some pretty careless words in my life, words that I wanted to take back the moment they left my mouth. What do I do now?
Lent is a time of repentance and renewal. It’s a time to seek forgiveness for the words we have spoken and seek to do better. In the stillness of Lent, we remember the damage that harmful words cause. There are so many ways we can hurt others through our words – angry words, gossip, rumors, or little jokes that aren’t funny but chip away at another’s self-esteem. In the stillness of Lent, we can also remember the healing that helpful words can bring. They can make God’s love real for those around us. This is a good time to think carefully about how we speak to – and about – others.
Make today a blessing day. Consciously make it your goal today to bless, through words, everyone you meet. Find something positive or encouraging to say. Give a compliment. Go out of your way to do this in as many ways as possible during the day. Then, after your day is done and you’re at home, reflect on the day. How do you feel? Do you feel blessed?
